What to know about the winter storm watch in effect for Wayne County, Indiana
A winter storm watch has been issued by the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service, potentially affecting many plans for the start of next week.
The watch, which affects portions of east-central Indiana and central and west-central Ohio, begins Sunday morning and will last through Monday night.
In the alert, heavy mixed precipitation is possible, with snow accumulations predicted to be 5 to 10 inches. Traveling is expected to be “very difficult.”
Starting Friday, conditions are expected to affect those morning and evening commutes by making roads, bridges and overpasses slick and hazardous, officials said.
Current forecasts from The Weather Channel show temperature highs this weekend are expected in the mid- to high 20s while the lows are expected to be in the low 20s to high teens.
The AAA Hoosier Motor Club said in a release that it is prepared for an increase of calls requesting roadside assistance. The club warned that the call volume and hazardous conditions could cause a delayed response time, especially if the area is inaccessible
When winter weather hits, stay home if possible,” the release said. “If you must drive and find yourself stuck on the side of the road, stay in your vehicle while you wait for help.”
AAA provided a list of tips for those who need to travel over the weekend:
Make sure you have an emergency car kit with flashlights, phone chargers, blankets, bottled water, a first aid kit, battery jumper cables and a shovel.
Check that your car’s lights and wipers are working properly and that your tires are properly inflated to the right pressure.
Fill up your gas tank and keep it at least half full to avoid frozen condensation on the inside of the tank.
