Hard graft, energy and tactical discipline – the big Coventry City contract debate

Coventry City comment from CoventryLive as Sky Blues reporter Andy Turner assesses the latest situation regarding Jamie Allen’s contract

You know exactly what you’re getting from Jamie Allen – hard graft, energy and tactical discipline, to name just a few of his many qualities.

That’s a given every time the midfielder steps foot on the pitch for Coventry City, but against Sunderland he went up a level with what was arguably his most impressive performance in his five-and-a-half years with the club. He simply stood out in as eye-catching an individual display as you are likely to see in the opening 45 minutes against the Black Cats in what can only be described as a midfield masterclass.

His contribution was all the more impressive for the fact that he’d featured in just 31 minutes of the previous four matches when he’d been asked to step off the bench to help see out results, two of which were in the 89th minute. In fact, his previous start was against Ipswich in the FA Cup in early February. To come back into the starting line-up and play like he did speaks volumes for his character and determination.

Allen is a player who goes about his business in a quiet way, driven by an incredible work ethic, and his extraordinary showing against Sunderland might just have been a timely reminder to Frank Lampard of what he can offer. It’s probably not in the player’s nature, but you could argue it was a clear case of the 30-year-old proving a point.
