Canberra Raiders Reportedly Back Away from Offer for Super League Star Over ‘Ridiculous’ Transfer Fee

The Canberra Raiders have reportedly stepped back from a potential deal for a Super League star, citing an exorbitant transfer fee as the main reason for their decision. Danny Walker who had attracted considerable interest from the Raiders, is believed to have commanded a fee far beyond what the NRL club considered reasonable, leaving negotiations at a standstill.

The Raiders had been actively exploring options to bolster their squad ahead of the upcoming NRL season. As the club continues to navigate through the challenges of roster management, including player injuries and the potential departures of key players, they turned their attention to the Super League, eyeing high-caliber talent from the northern hemisphere. This approach has become more common among NRL clubs seeking fresh talent and strong performers from the European league.

Reports suggest that the club was initially keen to bring the player to Australia, impressed by his performance in the Super League. However, discussions reportedly soured when his current club set a transfer fee the Raiders deemed “ridiculous.” Sources close to the negotiations have indicated that the fee demanded was well above market expectations, leading the Raiders to pull back from the deal.

This decision echoes a growing sentiment within the NRL that some Super League clubs are inflating the value of their top players, particularly as international interest grows. While there is a mutual respect between the two leagues, financial expectations can vary greatly, and in this case, it seems the gap was too wide to bridge.
