The Chicago Blackhawks took a major gamble when they traded for defenseman Seth Jones, a move that continues to shape the team’s direction. While the blockbuster deal was intended to strengthen the defense, its long-term impact is now under heavy scrutiny.
In July 2021, Chicago sent Adam Boqvist, multiple draft picks—including a first-round selection—and other assets to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Jones. Along with the trade, the Blackhawks signed him to an eight-year, $76 million extension, making him one of the NHL’s highest-paid defensemen. At the time, the organization was looking to fast-track its return to playoff contention.
Jones has been a workhorse for Chicago, logging heavy minutes and providing offensive contributions. However, the team has struggled overall, undergoing roster changes and shifting into a rebuilding phase. With veteran players departing and the franchise prioritizing young talent, questions remain about whether acquiring Jones was the right decision for a team undergoing such a transition.
One of the biggest concerns surrounding the trade is Jones’ $9.5 million annual cap hit. As the Blackhawks focus on developing prospects like Connor Bedard, committing that much salary to a veteran defenseman could limit flexibility in the team’s rebuild. Some critics argue that acquiring Jones delayed a full reset, while others believe his leadership is essential for guiding young players.
The Blackhawks now face a crucial decision: keep Jones as a key piece of their defense or explore trade options to clear cap space and accelerate their rebuild. However, moving his contract would be a challenge, as not many teams are willing to take on such a large financial commitment.
Regardless of what happens next, the Seth Jones trade remains one of the most significant moves in recent Blackhawks history. Whether it ultimately benefits or burdens the franchise’s future is still up for debate.
