Russell Wilson, who recently joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, has received a significant update on his role with the team. After missing the first five games of the 2024 season due to a calf injury, Wilson completed a full week of practice for the first time and is now expected to serve as the backup quarterback for the Steelers in their upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Initially brought in to be the starting quarterback, Wilson’s injury allowed Justin Fields to lead the team to a 3-2 start. Fields’ performance has been solid, especially in rushing, but he has faced criticism for his passing game. Despite Wilson’s return to health, head coach Mike Tomlin has decided to keep Fields as the starter, with Wilson serving as the No. 2 quarterback.
Tomlin emphasized that Wilson’s recovery is progressing well but noted that the veteran quarterback still needs to knock off some rust before competing for the starting position. Wilson’s experience and leadership are expected to boost the team’s morale, especially if he eventually steps into the starting role later in the season.
The decision to continue with Fields as the starter reflects the team’s caution in not rushing Wilson back onto the field, even as they aim to end their two-game losing streak against the Raiders. Wilson’s return could add an interesting dynamic to the team’s quarterback situation as the season progresses.
