The Carolina Panthers have added a new face to their secondary by signing former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Chris Wilcox. The move comes as the Panthers continue to refine their roster and strengthen their defensive backfield, aiming to improve their overall pass defense as the season progresses.
Wilcox’s Journey to the NFL
Chris Wilcox, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound cornerback, began his football career at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he played college football for the Cougars. Known for his speed and athleticism, Wilcox became a key player in BYU’s defense. His performance during his college career showcased his ability to cover receivers effectively, thanks to his combination of size and speed, which made him an attractive prospect for NFL scouts.
In the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilcox was selected in the seventh round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although he didn’t make the Buccaneers’ final roster, he was quickly picked up by the Indianapolis Colts. Over the next two seasons, Wilcox found opportunities with the Arizona Cardinals and most recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers. His journey through various NFL teams has provided him with valuable experience and development, making him a versatile asset capable of stepping into different defensive schemes.
The Panthers have faced challenges in their defensive backfield this season, dealing with injuries and inconsistent play.
