When the Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, expectations were sky-high. Young, the former Alabama standout and Heisman Trophy winner, was hailed as the future face of the franchise. However, his rookie season has been a rollercoaster, leaving fans, analysts, and even Panthers’ leadership questioning whether he’s truly the long-term answer at quarterback.
Head coach Frank Reich, who was replaced mid-season by interim coach Chris Tabor, often spoke about Young’s resilience and football IQ. “Bryce has all the tools to be successful,” Reich said earlier in the season. Yet, statistics and on-field performances have sparked debates. Young has shown flashes of brilliance, including precise throws under pressure and a natural ability to command the huddle. But inconsistency, struggles behind a shaky offensive line, and growing pains have overshadowed those moments.
Former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, a franchise legend, weighed in during a podcast appearance. “Bryce is talented, no doubt, but the organization has to set him up for success. It’s not just on him.”
Meanwhile, veteran receiver Adam Thielen, one of Young’s primary targets, has publicly supported the young QB. “He’s a competitor. He’s learning, he’s growing, and you can see the potential every week,” Thielen said after a close game earlier in the season.
The Panthers’ front office, including general manager Scott Fitterer, faces a crucial offseason. Building a stronger supporting cast around Young—improving the offensive line and adding playmakers—will be essential if they want to see him thrive.
At this stage, the question remains unanswered: Is Bryce Young the Panthers’ franchise quarterback? The talent is evident, but the journey to proving himself is far from over.
