Liverpool Eye Jeremie Frimpong as Potential Successor to Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool are reportedly in advanced discussions to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen as a possible replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract is set to expire this summer amid growing links to Real Madrid.

Frimpong, 24, has had an outstanding season with the newly crowned Bundesliga champions under Xabi Alonso. The Dutch full-back registered 14 goals and 10 assists, playing a key role in Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten campaign. His contract includes a release clause of around £29.7 million, which makes him an appealing and relatively affordable target.

However, questions remain about how well Frimpong would fit into Liverpool’s tactical approach. New manager Arne Slot reportedly favors a back-four formation, while Frimpong has flourished as a wing-back in a 3-4-3 setup. This discrepancy has raised doubts about whether Liverpool will formally pursue the Dutchman.

Despite those concerns, Frimpong’s background could make him an asset to the Reds. Having spent a significant part of his youth career at Manchester City, he qualifies as a homegrown player—an increasingly important consideration with the potential departure of other locally trained talents. His Dutch nationality also aligns him with current Liverpool players like Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch, which could ease his adaptation to the squad.

While Frimpong brings explosive attacking qualities and fits some of the club’s squad-building criteria, any move will hinge on whether his style aligns with Slot’s vision for the team. The situation is expected to develop as the summer transfer window nears.
