Cooper Cronk Throws Support Behind Grant as Slater Takes Big Origin Risk

Queensland Maroons great Cooper Cronk has come out in strong support of star hooker Harry Grant, despite growing uncertainty surrounding Grant’s availability for the 2025 State of Origin opener.

Grant, nursing a sternum injury, has missed Melbourne Storm’s past two games and remains in a race against time to be fit for Game I on May 28. His potential absence presents a major challenge for Queensland coach Billy Slater.

Cronk, however, is adamant Grant remains a key figure in the Maroons’ setup. “Harry always delivers on the big stage,” Cronk said. “His on-field chemistry with Ben Hunt has played a massive role in Queensland’s recent Origin success.”

With Grant’s fitness still in question, Slater may be forced to consider an untested option like Bulldogs rake Reed Mahoney. While Mahoney is yet to debut at Origin level, Slater has shown a willingness to make bold calls during his tenure.

“It’s a huge gamble introducing a new face under Origin pressure,” Cronk added. “But Billy’s proven he’s not afraid to take risks if it benefits the team.”

Slater, meanwhile, has defended his selection strategy, stressing the need for players to be fully fit and prepared. “We only want players who are 100% ready to perform. It’s about doing what’s best for Queensland,” he said.

With kickoff drawing closer, the spotlight remains on Grant’s recovery and Slater’s final squad decision a move that could make or break Queensland’s Origin campaign.
