Slot Disagrees with Michael Owen “League Title Isn’t Enough”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has pushed back against claims made by Michael Owen suggesting that winning the Premier League alone wouldn’t be a significant enough achievement for the Reds. Slot, who recently took over from Jürgen Klopp, firmly rejected the notion that claiming England’s top domestic prize wouldn’t be sufficient.

In a recent interview, Slot highlighted the magnitude of winning the Premier League. “Securing the league title is no small feat—it’s the hardest competition out there. Saying that it’s not enough undervalues the challenge it presents.”

Owen, who enjoyed a successful spell at Liverpool between 1996 and 2004, had commented that Slot must also deliver Champions League success to truly cement his legacy at the club.

Slot acknowledged the importance of European success but stressed the difficulty of lifting the league trophy. “Naturally, every club dreams of European trophies, but dominating the Premier League requires consistency and top-level performance week in, week out. That in itself is a major statement.”

He also reminded fans of the joy Klopp’s league triumph in 2020 brought to the club and its supporters. “That title meant everything—it was a milestone. It showed the world what Liverpool could do, and that kind of achievement deserves respect.”

As Slot prepares his squad for the upcoming campaign, he remains focused on building a team capable of long-term success. While the ambition for more titles remains high, he believes that winning the league would already be a powerful sign of success—not something to be downplayed.
