Miami QB Cam Ward Calls for 16-Team College Football Playoff

Cam Ward, quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes, has voiced his support for a larger College Football Playoff (CFP), suggesting the field should grow to at least 16 teams. Ward argued this change would increase fairness and give more schools an opportunity to compete for the national championship.

Ward criticized the current four-team system for excluding many talented teams. “A lot of deserving programs are left out,” he remarked, adding that expanding the playoffs would create thrilling matchups and bring more balance to college football.

The current format often favors teams from Power Five conferences, leaving smaller schools at a disadvantage. Ward believes that a 16-team structure would level the competition and draw inspiration from other sports, such as basketball, where expanded tournaments have resulted in unforgettable moments and more parity.

Ward also emphasized the benefits for players, noting that a larger playoff would provide greater visibility to NFL scouts. “This isn’t just about championships—it’s about showcasing talent on a bigger stage,” he said.

While skeptics worry about the logistical and physical challenges of a larger playoff, Ward suggested that adjustments to the schedule could resolve these concerns.

With the CFP set to expand to 12 teams in 2024, Ward’s push for an even larger format sparks a broader debate about how college football can evolve to accommodate growing fan and player expectations.
