In a stunning turn of events, Wigan Warriors coach Matt Peet is on the verge of being sacked after his team’s embarrassing 30-10 loss to relegation-threatened Toulouse Olympique. The defeat, which was Wigan’s fifth in their last seven games, has left Peet’s future at the club hanging by a thread.
According to sources close to the club, Wigan’s chairman, Ian Lenagan, has lost patience with Peet’s inability to turn the team’s fortunes around. Lenagan is said to be furious with the team’s performance and is considering replacing Peet with a more experienced coach.
Peet, who took over as Wigan coach at the start of the 2022 season, had been expected to lead the team to a top-four finish in the Super League. However, after a promising start to the season, Wigan’s form has nose-dived, leaving them struggling to make the play-offs.
The loss to Toulouse was the final straw for Lenagan, who had been giving Peet the benefit of the doubt despite the team’s poor form. “We’re extremely disappointed with the performance,” Lenagan said in a statement. “We expect more from our team, and we’ll be taking a close look at our coaching staff in the coming days.”
Peet’s post-match comments did little to alleviate the pressure on his shoulders. “We were disappointing, and we got what we deserved,” he said. “We need to take a hard look at ourselves and work out what’s going wrong.”
With Wigan’s next game against high-flying St Helens, Peet knows that he needs to come up with a plan to stop the rot. Anything less than a win could spell the end of his tenure as Wigan coach.
As one Wigan fan succinctly put it, “Peet’s got two weeks to save his job. If we don’t beat St Helens, he’s gone.” The pressure is well and truly on, and it remains to be seen whether Peet can turn things around and save his job.
